Holocaust Studies (HUM 245)

Picture
"I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented."--- Elie Wiesel

For the 3rd straight year  (July 1 - August 1, 2013) of the Prague Education Abroad Program we will feature an Introduction to Holocaust Studies course (HUM 245) through Gateway Community College in Phoenix, Arizona. This course is open to anyone interested in the subject matter, whether university student or community member across the country and may be taken for credit or on a Pass/Fail basis.

Dr. Ruth Callahan will be the instructor for this course that will focus on the literature of the Holocaust, such as historical documents, the testimony of survivors, fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry. Art relating to the Holocaust is also an important component of the course. The course will provide a theological, political, and social context for anti-Semitism, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries with particular attention to Nationalist Socialist ideology.

Very importantly, the course will offer a “living history” experience aided by a range of learning modalities, including visits to a variety of Holocaust-related sites such as the Jewish Quarter in Prague, Terezin/Theresienstadt camp in the Czech Republic, the “Schindler Museum" in Krakow, Poland, and the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps in Poland.  In addition, guest speakers will add substantially to the analysis and discussion.

Immersion in the richly diverse cultural environment of Prague will greatly enhance each participant’s experience in the program. Guided tours of Prague Castle, Wenceslas Square, the Old Town Square, and many other opportunities will provide participants with an unforgettable and life-transforming learning experience.

The program also includes an excursion to Cesky Krumlov in southern Bohemia which has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This region of the Czech Republic formed part of the largely German-speaking Sudetenland which England and France ceded to Hitler through the Munich Agreement of 1938 and that resulted in the full-scale Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1939.
