Václav Havel Memorial Scholarship

Václav Havel
Global Praxis, LLC is delighted to inaugurate a Prague Study Abroad Scholarship competition and dedicate it to honor the life of Václav Havel (Oct. 5, 1936 - Dec. 18, 2011). Havel was described by The Economist magazine as: “The unassuming man who taught, through plays and politics, how tyranny may be defied and overcome.”
Persecuted and imprisoned during the communist reign in then Czechoslovakia, Václav Havel—dissident and playwright—believed in opposing the ruthless communist authorities, armed not with guns and rifles, but with what Havel described as “living in truth.” “Truth and love must prevail over lies and hatred” was his revolutionary motto. Of all his writings, The Power of the Powerless holds special meaning for those who fight against great odds only to prevail by the power of truth.
His example of conscience over cowardice was exemplified in his challenge to the regime when he co-authored the human rights manifesto known as “Charter 77” which only a few individuals dared to sign. Having demonstrated his leadership during the repressive years of communism, when that regime and ideology collapsed in 1989, Havel was elected President of Czechoslovakia.
Global Praxis, LLC, honors this dissident, dramatist, president, and leader. It is our hope that through this Václav Havel Memorial Scholarship, his legacy will be remembered by those students who become recipients of this scholarship. Intended Use: Gateway Community College Prague Study Abroad Program (City of 100 Spires).
