Prague Education Abroad

Summer 2018

Picture of students in Prague
The Summer of 2018 marks the 13th consecutive year of the Maricopa Community College's Prague Study Abroad program. Over 400 participants have been treated to a remarkable cultural and educational experience in the heart of Central Europe in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

High school and university students, along with professionals, community members, and life-long learners have returned with life-transforming experiences from the living laboratory which is Prague, the Czech Republic, and excursions to neighboring countries like Germany, Hungary, Austria, or Poland.

Prague boasts one of the world's most pristine and varied collections of architecture, from Gothic to Renaissance, Baroque, Neo-Classical, Art Nouveau, Cubist and Ultra-Modern. Some of the most well known sights that you will have the opportunity to visit include Old Town Square in Prague (a market square since the 11th century), Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral, Vysherad Castle ruins, Charles Bridge, the Jewish Quarter and Wenceslas Square. You can also enjoy listening to Anton Dvorak's "New World Symphony" in one of the many concert halls around the city.

Included in the program, is a day trip to Česky Krumlov, with its Old Town almost encircled by the Vltava River, Česky Krumlov is a jewel of historical architecture in southern Bohemia. The town castle has preserved its medieval center as no other town in the region and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Most of the architecture of the old town and castle region dates from the 14th to 17th centuries. The town’s structures are primarily in Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. Also included are two nights for all classes in Vienna, Austria, except for the Holocaust Studies which will travel to Krakow, Poland. In Vienna, classes will visit the Künst Historische Museum and Akademie der bildenden Künst. The Introduction to Holocaust Studies class will tour Auschwitz and Birkenau.

SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2018 PROGRAM INCLUDE:

Courses offered: Art History and Digital Photography, . We are also very pleased to continue to offer “Introduction to Holocaust Studies" which will return to our program in 2019.  This course will use the Czech Republic and surrounding countries as a “living laboratory” of how Fascist ideology impacted this region, and particularly, how the Jewish community suffered under Hitler’s regime. Participants in this course will travel to Poland to visit Krakow and tour the concentration camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau as well as the Schindler Museum in Krakow.

All the other courses will travel to Vienna and visit major sites in this former Hapsburg capital like the Kunsthistoriche Museum or Schonbrunn Palace.
